The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Samura Kamara has handed over the African Union Gender Performance award Trophy to President Koroma. Sierra Leone was awarded in recognition of the country’s excellent performance in promoting women in nine thematic areas identified by the African Union Commission.
President Koroma said that the government has an Act on sexual offences to protect women and has also tried to address the issues on agriculture and free health care. The president revealed that the initiative is geared towards the empowerment of women and girl child education.
He said that government will continue to increase the participation of women in governance and in other sectors.
The minister said the award was approved at the recently held Twenty Fifth Ordinary Session of the Union in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Dr Samura Kamara said the African Union has also declared 2015 as the year of Women empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063.
Highlighting the nine thematic areas identified by the African Union Commission for the Award of the Trophy include Women and Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Women and Health, Women and Regional Integration, Women’s Human Rights and Gender-based Violence and Women and Media.
